Do you do the same thing time after time at the gym?
Do you find yourself getting bored with your current gym routine?
Do you loathe going to the gym because spending anymore than ten minutes on the treadmill sounds like torture, but you do it anyway?
If you answered YES to any or all of the questions above, it's time to mix up your workout routine and try something new!! I've talked about routine several times before and while, more often than not, my routine is fairly similar week after week, I do try to change things up every now and again swapping out my cardio or varying my strength training sessions.
And, if you are one that doesn't like to be on the treadmill or cardio equipment for 45 minute...guess what? Don't do it! You don't have too! There are a ton of other things you can do at the gym that won't have you bored out of your mind the entire duration of the exercise. If you change it up every now and again, I promise you will have some fun! And, those times on the treadmill can actually be something you look forward too because they aren't the end all, be all of your workout routine.
I got out of my normal routine twice this week and found that it re-energized me a bit more throughout the week. Not to mention, I felt more empowered and stronger doing something different and succeeding at it.
I don't usually do BODYPUMP as my strength training, but as luck would have it, the class I was planning to attend on Monday was running late so I made the call to head on into PUMP instead. Turns out it was the perfect thing for my morning! It was the launch of a new release, I got to see a couple friends I don't normally see on Monday mornings and got an amazing workout all at the same time!
On Wednesday, I headed over to CU Women's Boxing for my first full boxing workout. This was a pretty big departure from my typical M-F routine, but as it is September's gym of the month, I intended to immerse myself completely in this workout even if it meant stepping outside of my comfort zone to do it.
You guys, I would have never thought it, but I love boxing!! The workout was very challenging, but SO MUCH FUN. I honestly don't think I've sweat so much in my life, but I didn't care one bit. I was having way too much fun to even care how hot and sweaty I was. There is so much more to come on CU Women's Boxing when I roll out the featured gym post in the next couple of weeks. Suffice to say, I loved this addition to this week's workout routine and just might have to consider adding it in more often in the future!
So, here's the deal and a little something for you to try...
If trying a completely out of the ordinary class like Boxing is a little too far out on the 'try something new' spectrum, I still encourage you to evaluate your current gym routine and do one thing differently next week. Some ideas could be:
- Grab a friend and try out a new class that you haven't attended before (there is power and comfort in grabbing a buddy and not going alone).
- If cardio equipment is your jam...get off the treadmill and mix in a few minutes on the stairclimber, rower and/or elliptical.
- Add in a few cardio bursts like running intervals or jump squats during your outdoor walk.
- Find one piece of equipment you've never used before and give it a try. Ask for assistance if you need help. Gym staff is always willing to lend a hand, that's what they are there for!
- Try a new gym altogether. Many gyms offer a complimentary day pass to try things out or at a minimum require a small fee to drop-in for a single class. I've got an entire list of amazing places to check out in CU!
- Forget the cardio equipment altogether and try one of the FREE workouts on my website.
I think this activity will open your eyes to what else is available to you in your community and at your gym (or home if you don't use a gym) and you just might find your new favorite workout!
Know this: There is definitely more to the gym than whatever you are currently doing. It might be a little scary to step out of what you are used too, but ask yourself if you really enjoy what you are currently doing? If the answer is NO, it's time to find a new something that you love (or at least can look forward too/can learn to love). Ask a friend what their gym routine looks like and see if you can join them on their next workout. Mix it up and see what happens! I think you will be surprised at the fun you can have!!
