The inspiration for today's Tribal Knowledge Tuesday comes from one of my favorite books, Journey to the Heart by Melody Beattie. The book is filled with daily meditations that help to settle the mind, warm the spirit and create positive feelings and intentions to implement into daily life.

The meditations from Sunday and Monday of this week call to choose joy and create your own destiny. Many of us, myself included, are control freaks. We like to be in the drivers seat of our life at all times. We make the plays, we call the shots. We can find it difficult to let go. If we feel like we have lost control or alternatively life has control of us we can become disheartened, disengaged and upset or frustrated that things are going the way we had hoped or planned. We blame the situation or others that we have been dealt a bad hand. Do you identify with any of this? Virtual head nods if you feel me here.

While we might not be able to control everything in our lives, we do have the ability to choose how we react as well as take care of ourselves to prepare for how we may react to a person/situation/outcome. This we get to choose and that gives us a great deal of power. If we learn to let go of the things that are out of our control, choose joy and create the future that we desire by our behaviors and actions then we will come out on the other side feeling positive, empowered and have a better attitude about the cards laid in front of us.

Here are a few things (some large, some small) that we can do to be more proactive allowing us to choose more joy in our lives:

  • Write in a gratitude journal.
  • Start each day with a hug and kiss for everyone in the house.
  • Smile and greet a stranger.
  • Make your bed.
  • Set an intention for the day/week/month.
  • Read a book.
  • Send someone a thank-you note.
  • Ask your family members to tell you one good thing about their day.
  • Prepare dinner in advance.
  • Light a candle, put on your favorite music, buy yourself flowers.
  • Sing in the car or the shower.
  • Dance.
  • Don't slack on sleep.
  • Dedicate time each day for a little exercise.
  • Love yourself.

Each moment of our life is connected. Connected to the past and the future both of which hinge on the present. Let us learn to adapt and go with the flow. Trust the decisions we make and know that each choice is part of a bigger picture. Our reactions lay the foundation for how we move forward into each new step of our lives. Choose joy and joy will choose you. Choose joy and with the ease that comes know that your are in control of your destiny.
