Starting a workout routine can be challenging. Starting a workout routine as a new mom is infinitely more challenging. On top of caring for a new baby plus older kiddos if you have them, you are expected to manage the household, keep everything running smoothly while all you really want is a few minutes to yourself and the ability to be around and talk with other mommas that are in the exact situation as you. Oh, and on top of that that you are hoping the aforementioned workout routine will help you lose the baby weight and get back into shape so that you can keep up with those crazy kids of yours.

If this sounds at all relatable, you are not alone! There are tons of mommas that feel you 110 percent. They get it so much that there is an entire fitness organization built around this idea. Fit4Mom is an amazing group that provides moms with "support, community and self-care that she needs during pregnancy, postpartum and throughtout every stage of her motherhood journey". There are several Fit4Mom frachises nationwide and those of us in Champaign-Urbana are fortunate to have one in our very own community!

Fit4Mom at Meadowbook Park, Urbana

There are three different types of classes offered within the Fit4Mom Champaign-Urbana organization. Two of these classes, Stroller Strides and Barre, are designed specifically for you to bring your littles with you while you workout and another class/program, Body Back, is available for mommas only so you can get in that alone time that you've been craving plus a killer workout at the same time. In the warm spring, summer and fall months, both Stroller Strides and Stroller Barre are held at Meadowbrook Park in Urbana. If it's winter, too cold or rainy, class is moved indoors to MarketPlace Mall. The Body Back classes are held at Pursuit Fitness & Performance Institute.

Stroller Strides, the flagship class so-to-speak, is a complete, full-body workout designed for moms to bring their babies and kiddos with them in their stroller. The class is 60 minutes in length and includes strength training, functional core training and cardio intervals all while keeping the littles entertained as mom works out.

Stroller Barre is similar to Strides in that the class is 60 minutes in length and designed to bring along the littles in their strollers while you get your workout on. Barre is different in that it focuses more specifically on posture, stability and mobility through a variety of strength training and cardio intervals. Using exercise movements inspired by ballet, barre, Pilates and yoga, you will work from the inside out to regain your posture and balance while strengthening your body at the same time.

It doesn't take a lot of equipment to get in a great workout!

For both Stroller classes, it's important to understand that your baby might cry, that's normal and completely okay. It's just one of the the many nice things about being in a class with other moms...we've all been there, understand and get it. Throughout the class you are able to do whatever you need to do to take care of your babe. If your little is one that doesn't like to be stopped in their stroller for long periods of time (that would be my kids!), not to worry, as class will often move and you will be able to walk or run with your kiddo to the next station. The class also works through song, props and activities to make sure that the littles are kept as entertained as possible.

Remember, you're able to do whatever you need during class and the instructor is there to help so that you can still get in your workout while caring for your baby. For example, if baby needs to eat during class, you can go for it, feed that babe, and catch up when you're ready! Lastly, while you are able to attend each Stroller class during pregnancy, it is recommended to begin back to class after being cleared by your physican during your six-week postpartum checkup.

While Stroller Strides and Stroller Barre are geared for momma to be joined alongside baby, Body Back is just for momma. In this 8-week program, you'll be focusing on your mind and body improving not only physically but mentally as well. The 8-week program includes two 60-minute high-intensity interval (HIIT) classes a week. Beyond the classes, you'll also receive pre- and post-program assessments so you can easily track your progress and celebrate your accomplisments at the close of the eight weeks. While we know that no transformation is complete without also getting things straight in the kitchen, the Body Back program provides nutrition guidance to help educate you on developing healthy eating habits as well. You will also receive supplemental online workouts in addition to the two in-person HIIT classes plus an online community with the fellow mommas on this journey with you providing encouragement, accountability and support through the duration of the program. For the Body Back program, it's suggested that mommas be six-months postpartum before embarking on this transformation journey.

Over the last few weeks, I have been lucky to spend some time with the lovely ladies that run Fit4Mom Champaign-Urbana. Katelynn Clark heads up the Fit4Mom CU organization alongside additional fellow instructors Lisa Thomas and Sabrina Rice. I was able to try out each of the classes offered and found them all unique and challenging in different ways but possibly more than the workouts, I loved the sense of community and fellowship that I felt being a part of the group. Working out alongside other moms that all share a similar goal of wanting to improve their health is empowering and extremely helpful in this journey of motherhood.
